25 Christmas Books To Read With Your Kids

Humble honey-2.jpg

December is almost here! I don’t about guys but I am so ready for it. I’m ready for the Christmas themed everything, but in particular the crafts, books and films! There are SO many options! So last year (2017) I decided to do a Christmas book advent calendar as well as a chocolate one. This meant that everyday they got a new/used/borrowed Christmas book to read that day. It was so fun and Little Feet A loved it. There are so many options out there, Santa related ones, Nativity related ones, winter related ones. It can be overwhelming trying to decide which ones to get though and I’ve read a fair share of those that aren’t that great and just, another-Christmas-book. With that in mind I have put together a list of some of our favourite December and Christmas related books that we love, whether old classics or super new releases. We think there is something for everyone.

  1. Ten Little Elves, by Mike Brownlow and Simon RIckerty

If you are fans of all the other ‘Ten Little’ books, then this one is just as good. It was a firm favourite in our house last year and I can’t wait to get it out again.

The Jolly Postman brings back so many memories of my childhood. I loved all the little bits and pieces that each letter held inside. So when one of my school friends sent this to us last year I squealed very loudly! I know Little Feet A is going to LOVE this book when we get it out this year.

We have a love hate relationship with this book in our house. I can’t think about it without laughing. Daddy Big Feet has to take a deep breath when one of the girls picks this to read. Let’s be honest, there is no way you can read this book, it HAS to be sung. The whole way through! It’s fab!

Another classic. Little Feet A is learning to read and at school some of the first books that were sent home are books without words, just pictures that the children have to tell the story themselves by looking at the pictures. This book reminds me a little of them! We have had loads of fun looking through this one this year.

We love a Sue Hendra book, you might see there are a few on this list! Norman the slug, saves Christmas when Santa drops a sack full of presents and doesn’t realise.

I discovered this book by chance last year and it has to be my favourite Nativity book of all time. It tells the story of Jesus’ birth through the eyes of a young angel who watches from the sky. He has a part to play in it, but he doesn’t realise until right when he is needed. It’s a beautiful take on it and I always get a little teary eyed reading it.

Hands up who likes the Slinky Malinki series of books? We LOVE them, we have all of them, or so I thought. We stumbled across this one a few weeks ago and it’s just as good as all the others!

A beautiful book about the ritual and tradition of picking a Christmas tree and spending time with family and friends decorating it. Really lovely.

This book is the book that the John Lewis ad was based on a few years ago. It is about Bear who misses Christmas every year because he hibernates. This Christmas all his friends keep him up so that he can join in in all the festive fun. It’s a lovely book.

Oh this book. It is such a beautiful book. All about a little tree that didn’t grow, who no one wanted and was discarded. The a homeless child takes it and gives happiness to those who need it most. It ends with the tree being replanted and growing ten times it’s size. It is about believing in something when no one else does, it is about second chances. I challenge you to read it without getting chocked up!

If you haven’t come across Carly Hart books, you must start now! They are about princesses yes, but there is always a morale behind them and they rhyme which is always a favourite in our house. This Princess helps saves Christmas by helping Santa and the elves when Santa gets ill.

One for the older kids and also adults. It is about a Grandpa who writes a letter to his granddaughter that becomes an heirloom that gets read every year. It is all about caring for our earth. A very apt book for our current zeitgeist.

Couldn’t leave this one out! You all know it I know, but we love it. Plus the BBC adaptation has become a favourite in the last couple of weeks in our house.

Poo. I mean every kid loves poo, talks about poo, calls people poo nicknames, because you know… poo is hilarious. Well if you like these series of books, then you’ll LOVE this one too!

Preschoolers love flapbooks and this is a really lovely one of the nativity story. Our Little Feet adore this one and always take it in turns with who opens the next flap.

Another beautiful take on the Nativity story, this time through the eyes of the donkey that carried Mary. It is simple and illustrates the issue of refugees wonderfully, after all that is exactly what Jesus was. Another great factor is that they donate a percentage of the sales of this book to the charity War Child.

One for the music lovers. SUCH a FANTASTIC idea! The Nutcracker story, with the music! I mean you can’t get much more Christmassy then that, especially with the new Nutcracker film being realised this year.

A hilarious take on the gingerbread man story. Turns out he isn’t actually that fast and that when the fox catches him and takes a nibble is actually kind of revolting. Love it!

So there you have it. It is not exhaustive as I’d be here all day! But these are some of the ones we will be reading, have read and love. Some of them are brand new and I suspect some you won’t of heard of. We just hope that you enjoy reading some fabulous Christmas winter warmers this December. Reading is a huge part of our life and we hope this Winter you can snuggle down with your Little Feet and enjoy a laugh or two.
